As Roger pointed out, there's no real need to put the plug back, unless you are worried about warranty issues. The idle mixture screw itself is under spring tension, so it shouldn't move around after you adjust it. I suppose you could find a plug somewhere or make one from a brass rod of the appropriate diameter.

As far as getting it out is concerned, there is already a small hole which goes all the way through the plug. I used this as a pilot hole to drill a 1/8" hole. You have to be careful to stop as soon as the drill breaks through the back of the plug. Then, I used a sheet metal screw in my automotive dent puller to pull it out. A pair of pliers and a screw would work too, as would an "easy out" screw extractor or a tap that was slightly oversize for the hole drilled.

I think this will be the only perfomance improvement I do for awhile on the bike. I've considered replacing the exhaust, but I'm not really keen on more noise and a yellowed pipe. It seems to have plenty of power for my needs anyway.
